12th Annual Cornell Undergraduate Linguistics Colloquium (CULC12)
Cornell University's undergraduate linguistics association, The UnderLings, presents its twelfth annual undergraduate research colloquium. By facilitating communication and discussion between researchers, the conference aims to promote undergraduate research at all levels throughout the linguistics community. The Colloquium will take place from Friday April 27th to Sunday April 29th, 2018. (Friday will not include presentations, but we will have a welcome greeting, registration, and an evening social event.)
Keynote Speakers
External Speaker: Lauren Clemens
Lauren Clemens is an assistant professor in the Department of Anthropology and the Program in Linguistics and Cognitive Science at University at Albany, State University of New York. Her primary interests are theoretical syntax and the syntax-prosody interface. She primarily works with data from the Austronesian and Mayan families, using both traditional and quantitative methods. Since moving to Albany, she has worked on the San Juan Copala variant of Triqui (Oto-Manguean). She has collaborated with the Insitutie of Mesoamerican Studies and Triquis Sin Fronteras, and has contributed to an online dictionary for thr ~1000 Triqui residents of Capital City, NY. We thank her for accepting our invitation!
Internal Speaker: Abby Cohn
Professor Cohn's research focuses primarily on phonetics and phonology and their interaction taking a laboratory phonology approach. The implicit relationship between phonology -the abstract patterning of sounds as part of a sound system, and phonetics--the physical output - has been at the center of her research. Prof. Cohn also focuses on the documentation and analysis of the Austronesian languages of Indonesia, including issues of language use and language shift of the local languages of Indonesia as impacted by the increased use of Indonesian. In 2012-13, she was a Fulbright Senior Research Scholar, at Unika Atma Jaya for a research project entitled "Language Contact in Indonesia: Shifts in Usage and their Structural Manifestations."
Call for Abstracts
Student participation is encouraged in a variety of subfields of linguistics, including but not limited to phonetics, phonology, syntax, historical linguistics, sociolinguistics, psycholinguistics, and language acquisition. Applicants pursuing a B.A., B.S., or equivalent degree are invited to submit an abstract for a talk of no more than twenty minutes in length or for a poster presentation at our poster session. Please indicate in your submissions whether you would like to be considered for a poster, a talk, or both.
Abstracts should be submitted to CULinguisticsColloquium@gmail.com by Feburary 28th, 2018.
Abstracts must be at most two pages long, including data and references, on letter-size or A4 paper with 1 inch margins on all sides and at least 11 point font. Abstracts themselves should have a clear title and should be anonymous a must be submitted electronically to CULinguisticsColloquium@gmail.com in PDF format.
